Backcountry 101: Youth Avalanche Education

This course is specifically designed for youth new to the backcountry. Heavy on practical, usable skills and local information, this is a great place for students to start building their avalanche skills. Alyeska Resort makes an ideal setting for young backcountry users, allowing Backcountry 101 participants to maximize field and practice time. Students will finish the course with understanding of:

  • Avalanche formation
  • Recognition of red flags for avalanche hazard
  • Safe travel techniques
  • Self-help and backcountry rescue
  • Decision-making
  • Terrain analysis
  • Interaction with local avalanche professionals & online resources
